TIRUPUR: Muyarchi, a public initiative, has launched a new health scheme for poor women by roping in 16 private nursing homes in the town to provide consultation at a much a lower fee.

Under the scheme, the women will be given consultation at Rs.10 and they can get medicines at concession rates.

In some case, surgeries will be performed at concession rates, N. Chidambaram, founder president of Muyarchi, has said.

Saroja Prabhakaran, Vice-Chancellor of Avanashilingam University for Women, inaugurated the scheme. Nearly 3,000 poor women identified by Self-help groups in Tirupur, Velampalayam, and Nallur municipalities and Andipalayam, Nerupperichal, Chettipalayam, Veerapandi, Mangalam and Murugampalayam villages were given identity cards to avail themselves of these concessions.

Social worker Kesavino Aram of Santhi Ashram, Coimbatore; T. Murugan, project officer, Directorate of Rural Development Agency; A. Muruganathan, former district Governor of Rotary International and several others took part. According to R. Murali, working president of Muyarchi, the scheme is to discourage self medication by poor women.

He said poor women could save much by using the facility and they could spend the money for education of their children.

N. Murali, vice-president of the organisation submitted project report.

Earlier, at a seminar on ‘Indian women in 2020 – an overview,’ resolutions were passed demanding introduction of more special buses exclusively for women at Tirupur, especially during the peak hours. The introduction of such buses would mitigate sufferings of women hosiery workers of Tirupur.

Resolutions seeking setting up of a Government Hospital, on the northern parts of Tirupur, establishment of two more women police stations in the town were also passed.

The seminar wanted concerted efforts to strengthen security of the working women here.

It asked the district administration to create a commercial complex exclusively to sell products by women Self-help groups.
