Singareni collieries’ workers gearing for strike

HYDERABAD: A strike in Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) appears inevitable with the recognised workers union firm about pressing for its strike notice at the crucial meeting with the company management before the Regional Labour Commissioner (RLC) on Friday.

The Singareni Collieries Workers Union which would be represented at the conciliation meeting convened by the RLC, Ramana Kumar, has decided to seek the ‘Failure Report’ on talks if the management put forth the Government view on its demand to once again keep in abeyance the recovery of professional tax from the wages of workers from January.

The union general secretary, V. Sitaramaiah, said the union had information that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had desired deduction of professional tax from the wages of workers at any cost from January. Dr. Reddy spoke his mind when Power and Coal Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir and Commercial Taxes Minister Konathala Ramakrishna met him on Thursday. The management was likely to convey the same view at the meeting with the RLC in which case the union will seek the failure report and announce strike anytime after seven days, Mr. Sitaramaiah said.

The conciliation meeting was actually scheduled for Thursday afternoon but was postponed to Friday morning since the management did not turn up.
