China shocked at assassination

BEIJING: China expressed shock at the assassination and “strongly condemns” the attack, state media reported.

Foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said China “is shocked at the killing of Pakistan’s opposition leader Benazir Bhutto and strongly condemns the terrorist attack,” said Xinhua news agency.

“We also extend condolences to the families of Bhutto and other victims,” Mr. Qin said. China is one of Pakistan’s closest allies. It maintained strong relations with Ms. Bhutto when she was in power, and has continued its close ties with the government of current President Pervez Musharraf.

The European Commission condemned the killing as “an attack against democracy”. “The European Commission condemns this callous terrorist attack two weeks ahead of election day in the strongest terms,” said Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. — AP
