Hindraf launches signature campaign
P.S. Suryanarayana
SINGAPORE: The Hindu Rights Action Force on Thursday launched “a one-million signature campaign” for the release of five of its detained leaders and for the “equal rights” of the ethnic Indian minority in Malaysia.
Hindraf leader P. Waytha Moorthy, now camping in London, told The Hindu over telephone from there that “the two-pronged signature campaign” would have an “international” dimension as well. Those supportive of the “cause of the minority [ethnic] Indians in Malaysia,” regardless of their nationalities, could sign. This new campaign for the “equal rights” of Malaysian Indians, on a par with the Malay-majority, would apply to such spheres as education, employment, and social life, he said.
In a transparent reference to Hindraf’s “campaigns,” Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi called upon the “moderates” among all ethnic groups in the country not to yield political space to the “extremists.”
