SHARING A BOND: Poet O.N.V. Kurup interacts with children at a State-level camp on ‘Poetry and story,’ organised by the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare, in the city on Thursday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Poetry is an imitation of creative nature and not created nature, poet O.N.V. Kurup has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating a State-level camp on poetry and story writing for children organised by the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare in the city on Thursday.

“The creative nature explores how nature has been created and the mystery behind creation. In order to write poetry, we should identify the creative nature within ourselves,” Mr. Kurup said.

According to him, a poet can be disregarded by society but not his poems. “Kumaranasan was a poet who had to face discriminations from society. But people respect him through his poems,” he said.

Like Kumaranasan most of the poets earn fame and glory once they pass away. Kumaranasan is the only poet who has three memorials in the State, at the place of his birth, the place where he lived and the place where he died.

Mr. Kurup advised children not to become victims of ‘duplicate’ culture that is spreading fast in society. “Whenever I read poems written by children, I get the feeling that it has been duplicated from some periodicals. The aim of this camp should be to enable children to write original poetry,” he said.

However, he warned children against nurturing any delusion that he would be able to come up with a poem or a short story at the end of the four-day camp.

“The purpose of this camp is to create awareness among children about the significance of poetry and short story and the aspects which separate these creative genres,” he said.

The talent to express one’s creative feeling through music, poetry and short story may not be available to everyone. “To write poems one should have an innate urge,” said Mr. Kurup.

Around 100 children studying in various schools across the State are attending the camp.

The camp aimed at promoting the creative skills in children will conclude on Sunday. Various cultural programmes, picnics, story telling and interactive sessions have been arranged as a part of the camp.
