Fourteen villages to join Corporation

Special Correspondent

Council adopts resolution at urgent meeting

TIRUCHI: Fourteen village panchayats around Tiruchi city limits are likely to be merged with Tiruchi Corporation under the delimitation of local bodies.

The move is based on the proposals put forward at a public hearing held recently. The Corporation Council, at an urgent meeting chaired by Mayor Sarubala R.Tondaiman on Thursday, adopted a resolution approving the merger of the 14 villages.

Accordingly, Panayakurichi, Keezha Mullaikudi, Kuvalakudi, Agaram, Cholamadevi, Navalpattu, Gundur, Chozhanganallur, Nachikurichi, Keezhakurichi, Kambarasampettai and Malliampathu are to be brought under the Corporation.

The villages are now under the Tiruverambur, Manikandam and Andhanallur unions. The population of these villages range from a minimum of about 2,293 (Kuvalakudi) to 30,000 (Agaram).

Once the merger is through, the Tiruchi Corporation land area would increase to 223.23 square kilometres from 146.90 sq.km. The population (as per the 1991 census) would increase to 8.60 lakh from 7.52 lakh. The council resolution would be forwarded to the government for follow-up action.

Road repair

Earlier, speaking at the meeting, several councillors urged the Corporation to take steps on a war-footing to repair the damages caused to roads and drains during the recent rains.

Some councillors also demanded eviction of encroachments which hindered the water courses. A. Joseph Gerald demanded the widening of Keezhpokki vent to ensure quick draining of rain water in Karumandapam region.

Commissioner T.T.Balsamy said the Corporation had identified encroachments that obstructed water flow. Notices have been issued in some cases already.

Jawahar of the Congress urged the Mayor to take steps to establish a bus stand at Srirangam. The old bus stand in the temple town could be revived, he said. The Mayor assured to draw up a proposal after inspecting the site.

A cross-section of the councilors condemned the Joint Commissioner of the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple for failing to issue passes to the councillors for the recent Vaikunda Ekadasi festival. Mrs.Tondaiman said she had already conveyed her displeasure to the Collector on the matter.

Office assistants as domestic help

AIADMK floor leader Mariam Pitchai alleged that most junior engineers of the Corporation were not discharging their duties properly. Office assistants and non-muster roll employees were being used as domestic help by some junior engineers, he alleged and demanded stern action against the erring officials.
