IISc case: no progress in probe

Chitra V. Ramani

Police destroyed terrorist network in the State

Visits to various States proved futile

Bangalore: It was two years ago that armed gunmen opened fire on people coming out of an international conference at J.N. Tata Auditorium, Indian Institute of Science, killing a senior scientist and injuring four.

Speaking to The Hindu, Bipin Gopal Krishna, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), said that the police had made little headway in the attack, reportedly executed by operatives belong to Lashkar-e-Taiba. “After the incident, seven persons with alleged terrorist links were arrested. We even filed charge sheets against them in the court. However, we have not been able to zero in on the terrorists,” he said.

Mr. Krishna said the police, during the course of investigation, had formed a database on the terrorist groups. “Our officials visited Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and other States in the hope of getting some clues. However, they got no leads.”

Asked whether the arrested had indeed undergone arms training abroad, he repeated that headway had not been made in the case.

Although the police gathered information about the activities of LeT, they did not have new clues on those said to be involved in the IISc. attack. The investigation into the attack, however, helped in unearthing the LeT’s network in the State. With that vital information, the police were able to foil terrorist’s plan to attack the Kaiga nuclear plant, Sharavathi power transmission lines, the Alamatti Dam and some vital installations in Bangalore, the police had earlier claimed.
