K. Selvaraj
TIRUPUR: A former hosiery worker is all set to become the first Mayor of the knitwear city of Tirupur.
Municipal Chairman K. Selvaraj (52), who started as a hosiery worker and later played an active role in the labour wing of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), will take over as Mayor of Tirupur Corporation on January 1, according to an Ordinance issued by the Government.
He has been the secretary of Tirupur town unit of DMK since 1987 and has served as the chairman of Tirupur Municipality between 1996 and 2001. The knitwear city is wearing a festive look with a deluge of black and red flags and digital banners welcoming Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin, who will inaugurate the Corporation here on Saturday.
Joining the celebrations, trade and industry will donate a 100-sovereign gold chain to the Mayor. A joint meeting of various trade associations a couple days ago here has formed a committee headed by Mohan P. Kandasamy, president of the South India Hosiery Manufacturers’ Association to collect gold for the purpose. Tirupur Exporters’ Association joint secretary K. Manthrachalam will be its secretary.
“We are indeed very happy over the upgrade and thank the Government for fulfilling one of our long pending demands. To mark our joy, we will sponsor the chain on behalf of the industry,” says Mr. Kandasamy.
Mr. Karunanidhi will present the sceptre and chain to Mr. Selvaraj at a function organised on the new bus stand premises. His deputy K. Senthil Kumar (Congress) will become the Deputy Mayor. Rural Industries Minister and Coimbatore district secretary of the DMK, Pongalur N. Palanisamy would sponsor a three-and-a-half kg silver sceptre for the Mayor on behalf of his party.
