Special Correspondent

TIRUVANNAMALAI: The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board will execute the Underground Drainage Scheme for the Tiruvannamalai Municipality in two phases at a total cost of Rs.53.61 crore.

The first phase of the work, costing Rs.28.93 crore and covering 21 wards, would commence soon, according to a release from the Information and Public Relations Officer, Tiruvannamalai.

The scheme has been designed for a projected population of 1.44 lakh in 2008, 1.74 lakh in 2023 and 2.06 lakh in 2038.

The first phase would provide connections to 12,000 houses and collect a total of 1.26 million litres of drainage.

Under the second phase, which would cost Rs.24.68 crore, connections would be provided to 10,000 houses in 18 wards and 8.80 million litres of waste water collected.

The drainage from the houses would be connected to a main pumping station in Bandarakulam on Vettavalam Road. It would be treated through modern technology as per the design of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board at the treatment plant to be put up at Chitheri near the New Bypass Road. The treated water would be stored at a lake in Keezhnachipattu and later used for irrigation.

Food Minister E.V. Velu, who presided over a consultation meeting organised in connection with the implementation of the scheme at the Collectorate here on Wednesday, said that a coordination meeting would be held under the presidentship of the Revenue Divisional Officer, Tiruvannamalai, once in 15 days to coordinate the activities of the various departments for implementing the scheme.

Petitions to be submitted by the public in connection with the scheme at meeting would be scrutinised.

The committee would meet under the presidentship of the Collector once in two months, he said.
