Bandh peaceful in Hospet

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: Normal life in Hospet came to a standstill following a bandh observed on Friday in response to a call given by sugarcane growers in protest against the failure of the India Sugar Refineries (ISR) factory to pay their dues for cane supplied during 2006-07.

Barring stray incidents of stone pelting, in which a couple of buses and a car were damaged, the bandh passed off peacefully. The farmers will continue their agitation by staging a “rasta roko” in the town on Saturday. The usually bustling town, near Hampi, wore a deserted look as the movement of buses was minimal. Shops, business establishments, theatres, hotels, restaurants, banks, educational institutions and offices remained closed throughout the day. The cane growers demanded payment of arrears and urged the factory to fix the price of sugarcane for the current year.
