Need for oral health policy stressed

Making a point: Director of Medical Education Ramananda Shetty addressing the gathering at the national conference on periodontology in Davangere on Friday.

DAVANGERE: Director of Medical Education Ramananda Shetty has expressed serious concern over the lack of a definite oral health policy in the country.

Inaugurating the 32nd Indian Periodontolgy National Conference here on Friday, Mr. Shetty said many recent research studies had proved that oral hygiene played a key role in health, and many diseases were caused by neglect of oral health.

He called upon dental professionals, faculty members and students to conduct more research on the importance of oral health so that awareness could be created on the need to formulate an oral health policy.

Misleading claims

Mr. Shetty also expressed shock over some institutions not conducting research work despite erecting boards stating so.

He also told students to attend Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes, workshops and conferences and update themselves on the latest developments in health sciences.

He said the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences had recently introduced a one-year fellowship programme for students of the Masters programme in Dental Sciences, in which they would be educated on implantology and other practical aspects of dental science.

Main aim

President of the Indian Society of Periodontology (ISP) Subhash Garg said that ISP was formed in 1975 with the primary aim of promoting Periodontology in India.

Affordability

Mr. Subhash said underdeveloped and developing countries were not in a position to afford therapeutic treatment and hence periodontists must work hard to prevent occurrence of gingival and periodontal diseases.

The former MLA and secretary of the Bapuji Education Association Shamanur Shivashankarappa and Secretary, Department of Forests, Ecology and Environment Aravind Jannu were present on the occasion.
