Explaining the proposal: Collector Santhosh Babu at an advisory meeting in Krishnagiri on Friday. — Krishnagiri: The district administration has identified 100 acres near Alapatti for establishment of the proposed mango export zone in Krishnagiri district, Collector Santhosh Babu has said. Speaking at an advisory meeting here on Friday, he said that efforts would be taken to export fresh fruits and processed mango pulp and other value added products under a single brand name called ‘Krishma’. A logo had been prepared and the society would be registered under the Societies Registration Act. The administration would prepare a project and forward it to the State Government shortly. Mr. Babu said that mangoes were cultivated in more than 33,000 hectares in the district with an increase of 3,000 acres a year. Despite registering high volumes small farmers and pulp owners were not getting better prices due to constraints in marketing and lack of adequate infrastructure and modernisation. ‘Krishma’ would have full-fledged infrastructure and provide remunerative prices for farmers and mango pulp producers. The administration had also proposed a web-based marketing system to enable farmers sell their produce to different agencies in the world. ‘Krishma’ would also have 50 acres of world-class mango orchards coupled with organic farming practices. Speaking at the meeting Regional Head Agricultural Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), Ravindra said that farmers and pulp producers would be trained based on the requirements of the pulp processing industry. APEDA was ready to sanction funds for setting up common infrastructure such as post-harvesting facilities, grading, pack house, ripening shed, vapour heat treatment and store house for pulp products. Mango juice was eligible for freight assistance of 25 per cent, he added. Mr. Ravindra stressed on the formation of a separate wing for marketing of fresh fruits and other value added products with focus on exports, input supply and conversion of solid waste into revenue. Speakers also stressed on formation of mango farmers’ clubs, tracking of raw materials, marketing aspects, issues of modernisation and manpower requirement. Sub-Collector Nagarajan, Managing Director Tanflora, Najeeb Ahmad and G. Selvam, Secretary, Krishma, were present.
