Singareni workers to strike work

Special Correspondent

Indefinite stir from December 31

Talks between SCWU and Regional Labour Commissioner Ramana Kumar fail

The Government is stubborn, alleges Singareni Collieries Workers’ Union

HYDERABAD: The Singareni Collieries Workers’ Union (SCWU), affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress, has reiterated its resolve to go on an indefinite strike from December 31, protesting against the Government’s unrelenting stand on their demand to scrap collection of professional tax from employees.

A union delegation went to meet Regional Labour Commissioner Ramana Kumar for conciliation talks. Later, Mr. Gattaiah and Mr. Seetharamaiah said the talks had failed and that they had decided to go ahead with the strike from December 31.

At a press conference here on Friday, V. Seetharamaiah, SCWU general secretary expressed concern over the management issuing a circular on December 13 regarding recovery of professional tax from employees at enhanced rates with effect from December 1. They said that the decision had come as a rude shock to them as they were either exempted or the process was deferred because of the hazardous nature of the coalminers’ jobs.

Mr. Seetharamaiah regretted that Government was ‘stubborn’, recalling that two meetings with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on December 12 and 26 were in vain. He recalled that earlier Chief Ministers - late N.T. Rama Rao and N. Chandrababu Naidu had not thought it fit to collect the said tax from those whose jobs were hazardous and prone to frequent accidents in mines.

Union’s working president Y. Gattaiah and Deputy General Secretary D. Seshaiah were present.
