Thiruvananthapuram: Short- and long-term measures were discussed at talks held at the official level on supplying rice and provisions from Andhra Pradesh to Kerala at Maveli Bhavan, head office of Supplyco, on Friday, an official press note released here said. The short-term measures included deputing a special team from Supplyco to Andhra Pradesh for visiting the procurement centres of that State, examining the quality of items and reaching an understanding on the price. The team would visit the procurement centres of the eastern Godavari region, the major crop of which was the Jaya variety of rice, which was very much in demand in Kerala. Uninterrupted supply of rice to Kerala was among the long-term measures discussed. Both the teams reached an understanding on the question of signing a long-term agreement for the purpose. The agreement would be tailor-made to check the seasonal fluctuation of rice prices in the open market in Kerala. For that, the system of temporary indents for the supply of rice would have to be stopped and a year-long arrangement made. The talks at the official level followed ministerial-level talks in Hyderabad on December 17. Kerala was represented by Yogesh Gupta, Managing Director, and A.T. James, General Manager of Supplyco, and Riji G. Nair, Manager Director, Consumerfed.
