GULBARGA: Well-known paediatric Orthopaedist Sharan S. Patil has bagged Dr. P.S. Shankar Vaidya Shree Award for 2007. Announcing the Vaidya Shree and Shresta Vaidya Sahitya awards here on Friday, vice-president of Dr. P.S. Shankar Pratishtan S.S. Patil and secretary S.S. Hiremath said Vasant Kulkarni, head of the Physiology Department of the Rajarajeshwari Medical College, Bangalore, and Gururaj Arikeri, who was studying postgraduate course in Dentistry in JJM Dental College in Davangere, had been selected for the Shresta Vaidya Sahitya Award for their books, “Dea Lokada Vismayagalu”, and “Hallina Rakshane”, respectively. While the Vaidya Shree Award comprises Rs. 10,000, a citation, commendation certificate and a shawl, the Shresta Vaidya Sahitya Award carries Rs. 5,000, a citation, commendation certificate and a shawl. Dr. Patil, who bagged the Rajyotsava Award for 2007, was born in Raichur district and had his basic education at Sharanabasaveshwar Residential Public School in Gulbarga and completed his M.B.B.S. in M.R. Medical College. After completing his Diploma and PG course in Orthopaedics in Kasturba Medical College of Manipal, he moved to the United Kingdom for training. He was honoured with Mch in Orthopaedics by Liverpool University in 1995, making him the youngest graduate to win it since the course began in 1926. Dr. Patil returned to India and established “Sparsh” Multi-speciality Hospital in Bangalore six months ago. Rashtrakavi G.S. Shivarudrappa will present the awards on January 1 and inaugurate the eighth anniversary celebrations of Dr. P.S. Shankar Pratishana. Dr. Vasant Kulkarni hails from Bijapur district and is now working in Bangalore. Dr. Gururaj Arikeri is from Shahapur in Gulbarga district.
