International meet on e-Governance inaugurated
State made use of IT to issue ration cards

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has said that the State Government was trying to extend eSeva facility for people across all the villages in the State.

He told the inaugural function of an International conference on e-Governance held at the University of Hyderabad campus here on Friday that the Government was developing a number of systems to connect villages and towns across the State.

These systems were important for good governance in the State since it had a large population of illiterate people. Dr. Reddy said the Congress Government would have finalised tenders through e-procurement for works costing Rs. 60,000 crore in 22 departments.

The Government made use of IT for issue of 1.82 crore ration cards and distribution of 45 lakh pensions a month. Information about pensioners who failed to take delivery of their monthly instalments was available at the State headquarters within five days and that too after sending them repeated reminders.

An online system of information had helped immensely in deliverables being delivered to people. Delivery of deliverables to people symbolised good and effective governance, he said. Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to President of Sri Lanka, said in his keynote address that the Sri Lankan Government was trying to make its people totally literate in the country in three to five years.

Mr. Weeratunga expected the next technological revolution in Sri Lanka to come from rural areas where 85 per cent of 9,800 schools in the country were located.

K.K. Agarwal, V-C of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi, and president of the Computer Society of India, said the biggest challenge of the country in the Eleventh Five Year Plan would be how to spend the Rs. 35,000 crore allocated for e-governance.
