News Analysis
* * The fifth paragraph in the lead story “Benazir Bhutto assassinated” (December 28, 2007, page 1) — a first-person account — was: “Daylight was fast fading but the first thing I saw was a dismembered head, face down, lying just outside the gate where I had stood hours earlier. The road was spattered with blood well beyond the gate where I had stood seconds earlier.” Nirupama Subramanian clarifies that it should have been “seconds earlier” in the first instance as well. * * The last paragraph in a report “Benazir’s family leaves Dubai for Karachi” (“International” page, December 28, 2007) was incomplete. It was a statement by the Pakistan People’s Party’s leader in the UAE, Mohammed Akran Farooqi, in reaction to Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. It was: “‘I can’t say anything ... I’m totally upset,’ he said between sobs.” (The words in italics were left out.) * * In an article “Of judicial activism and executive autonomy” (Op-ed, December 27, 2007), a sentence in the third paragraph was “… While the court intervenes under Articles 26 and 32 to defend the citizen’s rights, extraordinary impasses and riddlesome deadlocks created by the directives from the Chair and contrary writs of the judiciary make the law enigmatic.” Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer clarifies that it was a typographical error and should have been “Articles 226 and 32”. * * In the lead story “Narendra Modi sworn in for third time as Chief Minister” (December 26, 2007, page 1), the fourth paragraph — a list of those who attended the function — said “… the former Chief Ministers Arjun Munda (Chhatisgarh), Y.S. Yeddyurappa ….” It was an error. Arjun Munda is the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand. * * The fourth paragraph in a PTI report “Himachal poll counting today” (Delhi, December 28, 2007, page 3) was: “Counting work will be done on a new software for faster delivery of results. Forty one engineers from Bharat Electronic Limited (BEL), Bangalore, will be on duty to ensure smooth functioning of the Electronic Voting Machines.” It should have been “Bharat Electronics Limited”. * * The fifth paragraph in a report “AB special branch for micro-finance” (City edition – Vijayawada, December 27, 2007, page 2) was: “Andhra Bank Executive Director Kalyan Mukherjee said the bank had an international presence with several branches abroad but it always enjoyed a special relationship with Andhra Pradesh ….” Mr. Mukherjee clarifies that he was misquoted. He had said that the Andhra Bank is a national bank and for the first time is getting into an international foray. It opened a representative office in Dubai in 2006.
