THENI: A magisterial enquiry in connection with the fire opened by the police while arresting five suspected Maoists has commenced at Pallathur near Mayiladumparai in Andipatti taluk on Friday. Periyakulam sub-collector and sub-divisional magistrate J. Kumarakurubaran has commenced the enquiry at 11 a.m. and recorded all the information given by the locals, who deposed before him. The enquiry continued till 3 p.m. Talking to press persons after the inquiry, Mr. Kumarakurubaran stated that 18 persons residing in Pazha Nagar, Pallathur, Aruguveli and Vaikalpaarai deposed before the enquiry and recorded their information about the shoot-out. Already, 26 persons were summoned in this connection. “I will also enquire five policemen, who were injured in the crossfire and discuss whether the shooting was necessary or not during the arrest of the five suspected Maoists. Later, a detailed report will be submitted to the government,” he added. Sources said that the enquiry officer asked people about arrival and movement of suspected Maoists at villages and their behaviour and method of campaign on terrorism or extremism at these villages. The people were also enquired about arms and ammunition of Maoists and their hiding places. The official also questioned the witnesses about the group that shot the first round in the firing incident. In support of policeA majority of the witnesses gave information in support of the police only, they added. Already, an intensive campaign about the enquiry was done by beating tom-tom at Varushanadu, Muthalapuram, Thangammalpuram and Murukodai and other villages, where the movement of suspected Maoists was considered high. Collector Har Sahay Meena deputed Periyakulam sub-collector to hold a magisterial enquiry under section 150 (3) of Police Standing Order in connection with the fire opened by police while arresting five suspected Maoists on December 22. Special Task Force arrested them after a gun battle on Varushanadu hills on December 19. They arrested Mahalingam of Thirupatthur, Marudhu alias Lenin of Manamadurai, Muruganandham of Virudhalachalam, Sachin alias Logesh of Chattisgarh and Maran alias Balamurugan of Madurai.
