PUDUKOTTAI: Farmers’ representatives have pleaded for upward revision of procurement price for paddy for ensuring attractive return for the produce. Speaking at the Farmers’ Grievances Day meeting held here on Friday, they demanded that the procurement price be fixed at Rs.950 a quintal. They said that the State Government’s move to raise the minimum support price for paddy by Rs.50 was inadequate. Though the State Government had increased the price per quintal for the Grade ‘A’ variety to Rs.825, and common varieties to Rs.795, the rate was not commensurate with the production cost. District Collector D. Uthirakkumaran, who presided over the meeting, assured the farmers that the State Government would be apprised of the demand, for further action. The District Chairman of the Farmers’ Forum of India, G. S. Dhanapathy, said that though parts of the district registered sharp showers, the rate of realisation of water was far from satisfactory in several minor irrigation tanks. He said that the district administration and the Public Works Department should chalk out a special plan for proper strengthening and desilting of the banks and the supply channels. Curb monkey menace
Secretary of the All India Thevar Peravai Farmers’ Association Rama Theerthar said that monkey menace was posing a threat to the farmers in and around Tirumayam. Agricultural produce in villages such as Raaraapuram were being destroyed, he said pleading for immediate action by the Forests Department officials to trap the animals. The District secretary of Pudukottai Tree and Herbal Growers Association, P. Thangasamy, the president of the Federation of the Kallanai Kaalvai Ayacutdar Association, A. Ramasamy, were among those who spoke. Adequate storage level
The Collector said that the storage level at 127 tanks was adequate for irrigation for about two months while another 41 tanks would irrigate for about a month. He expressed the hope that the rain would benefit the ‘samba’ paddy growers in a big way.
