KARUR: Some private bank branches do not consider and grant education loans for students hailing from the service areas allotted to them in Karur district. If the situation persists the matter would be referred to the Reserve Bank of India for further action, banks were warned in the District Level Review Committee meeting of the bankers held here on Thursday. Collector T.N. Venkatesh chaired the meeting for the third quarter in the presence of Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, M. Madhavi, Senior Regional Manager, Indian Overseas Bank, Erode, S.H. Keshava, the NABARD Assistant General Manager, P.R. Srinivasan, and Lead District Manager K. Chandrasekaran. Reviewing the performance of the banks in the district during the second quarter, Mr. Venkatesh said that against the target of Rs.410.53 crore, banks had granted credit to the tune of Rs.440.02 crore to the priority sector for an overall achievement of 107 per cent. Similarly, the performance under the non-farm sector was to the tune of 130 per cent, while under agriculture it was just 91 per cent. The Collector urged the banks to pick up their performance in this sector during the present quarter. Same was the case with performance under the service and business sector that was pegged at 92 per cent. The total deposits in the banks in the district were to the tune of Rs.1,408 crore as against Rs.1,358 crore as of June 2007. The total advances were assessed at Rs.2,025 crore against Rs.1,949 crore during June 2007. The credit deposit ratio stood at 144 per cent against the RBI norm of 60 per cent. The Collector appreciated the banks for exceeding RBI norms under all parameters. Regarding the performance of banks under various government sponsored schemes, Mr. Venkatesh pointed out that under the SGSY economic activity, 68 loans have been sanctioned to the tune of Rs.299.39 crore while 28 loans have already been disbursed. Collector urged the banks to disburse the remaining loans immediately. Under the revolving fund scheme, 272 women self-help groups have been sanctioned credit to the tune of Rs.1.21 crore and revolving fund amounting to Rs.73.55 lakh has already been released to 170 SHGs. Under Prime Minister’s Rozgar Yojana, 480 loans have been sanctioned involving Rs.208.96 lakh. So far, 207 loans totalling Rs.100.44 lakh has been disbursed. The target was 580 loans. As against the target of 23,000 Kisan Credit Cards 13,468 cards have been issued involving Rs.28.20 crore. The Lead District Manager K. Chandrasekaran requested the bankers to expand credit to the eligible customers who have opened savings bank account under the Financial Inclusion Scheme, besides urging the bankers and departments to achieve the targets before February 2008.
