Police gear up to handle New Year revelry

Like last year, the police hope road users will cooperate with them and ensure that the celebrations are accident-free,

says L. Srikrishna

With carnival mood setting in for New Year, the Chennai City Traffic Police is all geared up to handle the extra rush and check revellers.

Keeping in mind the wider public security issues, the police are already on high alert and have stepped up random checks. Storming operations are conducted at many hideouts at regular intervals and a few suspects were detained for questioning and arre sted subsequently, Commissioner of Police G. Nanchil Kumaran had said at a press conference recently.

Personnel on night patrolling secure not only suspects, but also stop those who are drunk and negligent and rash drivers. Speaking to The Hindu, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar said traffic personnel would be deployed on different roads based on the pattern of vehicle movement.

Police have also conducted a scientific study on the extent of traffic violations and vehicles which are likely to overspeed.

The East Coast Road, Poonamallee High Road, GST Road, Kamarajar Salai, Old Mahabalipuram Road (Rajiv Gandhi Salai) and Mount Poonamallee are some of the stretches where the crowd is expected to turn in large numbers at odd hours.

Special road safety campaigns were on since December 10. Besides the police, car major Hyundai-sponsored student traffic volunteers were involved in the exercise.

Noting that on-road counselling was offered to persons found overspeeding, he said, “On Thursday alone, about 1,100 two-wheeler riders were stopped and educated about the need to be cautious. As many as 190 offenders were booked,” Mr. Kumar said.

Intensive drive is held on Velacherry bypass road, ECR, GST Road and other places where people showed a tendency to drive fast.

The volunteers on the ECR toll gate claimed to have achieved a little success.

A few student volunteers said “the drivers stopping and listening to us itself is a good sign… We hope that the motorists will bear in mind the consequences of rash driving.”

Mr. Sunil Kumar also said that as part of preventive measures, all the mobile barricades along the vulnerable stretches were provided with reflector tapes as they may not be visible at nights.

Like last year, the police hope road users will cooperate with the custodians of law and ensure that the New Year celebrations will be accident-free.
