Alandur to go for cement roads

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: The Alandur municipality has proposed to lay only concrete roads in the local body to cut down on maintenance charges and prevent frequent road digging by different agencies for laying cables.

During a meeting on Thursday, councillors gave their nod to the proposal and a Detailed Project Report would be prepared by experts appointed by the State government. Municipal Chairman R.S. Bharathi said at present, the road length in the local body was about 133 km, of which only 10 km had cement surface, while the rest were bitumen-topped.

Though laying concrete roads were more expensive than bitumen-topped roads, funds could be obtained under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, Mr. Bharathi said.

Municipal Engineer N. Mahesan said laying cement roads were twice more expensive, but once laid, they would incur less maintenance cost. Another component of the proposal was to provide underground ducts for laying cables . Now that the council had given its consent to the project, it was up to the State government to examine the proposal, including its estimated costs and more importantly, technical feasibility. Mr. Mahesan said that due to stagnation of rainwater during monsoon and movement of heavy vehicles, bitumen-topped roads suffered heavy damage, while cement roads withstood the impact.

Garbage disposal

Privatisation of garbage disposal, which was restricted to primary collection from households, has now been extended. The private agency — Srinivasan Waste Management — has been contracted by the municipality to collect garbage and dispose them of at the local body’s yard in Pallikaranai.

The municipality would be handing over its machinery, including vehicles and garbage bins to the private contractor, apart from paying it Rs. 23,325 a day.
