Farmers to stage novel protest

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Farmers from all over the country will assemble at Rameswaram on December 31 to stage a novel protest against the Government’s “indifferent attitude” towards their problems.

They will dump loan documents in the sea to signify they were “free from loan commitments,” according to Vettavalam K. Manikandan, president of the Tamilaga Vivasaigal Sangam and coordinator of the Kishan Coordination Committee.

Mr. Manikantan said thousands of farmers would participate. Their rally would be addressed by Sharad Joshi of Maharashtra. Bhupendar Singh Mann, president of the KCC, would participate.

“When the people welcome the New Year, we will be bidding good-bye to our debts,” Mr. Manikandan said. Though the State Government had claimed that it had waived crop loans, farmers, who had availed of loans from nationalised banks, were not benefited.

He alleged that distraint proceedings by the banks had driven farmers to suicide.
