PM urged to keep off Sri Lankan I-Day function

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani has appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh not to participate in the Independence Day celebrations of Sri Lanka on February 4.

He told reporters here on Friday, that the Prime Minister’s participation would send wrong signals to the international community.

Mr.Veeramani said Tamils in the island were forced to take up arms as their efforts for a negotiated solution to the ethnic issue had failed.

Moreover, the fighting between Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the Government had intensified. At this juncture it was not proper for Dr. Singh to participate in the celebrations.

He appealed to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to write to the Prime Minister on the issue.

Reacting to the election results in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, he said the victory of “communal forces” would pose a threat to the nation’s secular fabric.

He felt that the Congress had failed to consolidate secular forces and form a formidable front in these States. Only by uniting all secular forces could the communal forces be defeated.
