Heinous act, says Gowda

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, has termed the assassination of Benazir Bhutto a “heinous, brutal and dastardly act of criminals against humanity in general and a crime against the people of Pakistan in particular.”

In a letter circulated to the media here on Friday, Mr. Gowda stated that it was a major setback to the ongoing democratic process in our neighbouring country. The “murder most foul” was an indication of the growing scourge of terrorism and the threat it posed to the subcontinent.

He said the late leader had followed the footsteps of her father late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who too had made the supreme sacrifice for his country. Conveying his personal anguish over the assassination, Mr. Gowda said he would pray to the Almighty to provide strength and courage to her family to bear the pain and to the nation to overcome the tragedy and irreparable loss.

He appealed to all people who love democracy in Pakistan to maintain peace and exercise restraint and work for the restoration of democracy in Pakistan, which would be a real and befitting tribute to the late leader, Mr. Gowda said.
