ISLAMABAD: A day after the assassination of opposition leader and chairperson of the Pakistan People’s Party Benazir Bhutto, caretaker Prime Minister Mohammadmian Soomro said on Friday that for the time being, there was no plan to postpone the January 8 elections, and if any change was made, it would be done in consultation with all political parties. “Right now the elections stand as they are,” he said at a press conference after chairing a special meeting of the Cabinet. But uncertainty continued over the holding of the elections. While Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader Nawaz Sharif has announced a boycott of the election, the Pakistan People’s Party said it was not thinking about the elections. “I have no comments on this because we are in mourning. We are shattered,” said deputy leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim, when asked about the elections a few hours after Ms. Bhutto’s killing. Mr. Soomro said he had invited an all party conference for joint consultations on the elections, but Mr. Sharif has rejected the proposed APC as a “farce” and ruled out his party’s participation in it. The Prime Minister said he had also ordered a judicial inquiry into the killing of Benazir. Mr. Soomro said the head of the inquiry committee would be appointed in consultation with PPP leaders and the report would be finalised within a specified time.
