NEW DELHI: Sixteen years after Viswanathan Anand made history at Reggio Emilia, P. Hari Krishna returns to the Italian town aiming to become the second Indian to claim the honours in the 50th Reggio Emilia International chess tournament that opens on Saturday. Hari, who did not have a great 2007, will be looking to be the first Indian to win an international chess tournament in 2008 when the event ends on January 6. Hungary’s Zoltan Almasi heads the 10-player all-Grandmaster field. Russia’s Konstantin Landa is the other player higher rated than Hari in this nine-round competition. It may be recalled that Anand won this prestigious title in 1992 ahead of Gary Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov. He was the only player born outside of the erstwhile Soviet Union in the elite 10-player field. At that time, the 34th edition of the tournament boasted of the toughest field seen in the game. The players: Zoltan Almasi (Hun, 2651), Konstantin Landa (Rus, 2678), P. Hari Krishna (Ind, 2668), Vugar Gashimov (Aze, 2663). David Navara (Cze, 2656), Sergei Tiviakov (Ned, 2643), Ni Hua (Chn, 2641), Victor Korchnoi (Swi, 2611), Mihail Marin (Rom, 2551) and Michele Godena (Ita, 2535).
