KOCHI: The Cochin Oil Merchants’ Association has welcomed the Central government’s ban on import of palmolein through the ports in Kerala. The association praised the efforts made by the State government and the Coconut Board to get the import banned. However, it said that this would not necessarily boost coconut oil prices in Kerala. To be more effective and to be of relief to the coconut farmers, the Centre should ban import of palmolein in southern India. The Directorate-General of Foreign Trade had, in a notification on December 24, banned import of palmolein and other palm oil products through any of the ports in Kerala. This is with a view to boosting the prices of coconut oil by eliminating competition from the cheaper palmolein.
