“Neither bullets nor splinters killed her”

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: Benazir Bhutto died neither from a bullet nor a bomb splinter but of a fracture to her skull when her head struck the lever of her vehicle’s sunroof as she ducked the gunfire and bomb blast while leaving the venue of her election rally in Rawalpindi on Thursday, according to the Pakistan government.

Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema told journalists on Friday that Ms. Bhutto, who had emerged from the sunroof of her vehicle to wave to supporters, tried to duck the explosion but the impact of the blast threw her against the lever on the right side of the sunroof, causing a fracture to her skull causing death.

Brigadier (retd.) Cheema said there was “irrefutable evidence” that the attack was masterminded by South Waziristan-based Al-Qaeda leader Beithullah Mehsud.
