Staff Reporter

To ensure implementation of transportation policies

The Cell will function under the chairmanship of Lieutenant-Governor

‘Authority would lay emphasis on housing for the economically weaker sections’

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Development Authority has decided to set up a Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Planning Cell to ensure implementation of the transportation policies passed by the Delhi Government and as contained in the Master Plan for Delhi-2021.

According to a DDA spokesperson, the decision to set up the Cell was taken at the DDA Board’s budget meeting here on Friday. The Cell will function under a high-power committee under the chairmanship of Lieutenant-Governor and will have representatives of the Delhi Government, the Public Works Department, the Transport Department and all the other allied organisations involved in traffic and transportation planning and engineering.

Various sub-groups will be made under the high-power committee which will work on various subjects to ensure smooth circulation system and safety of passengers as well as deal with various aspects of transport engineering.

DDA member Mahabal Mishra suggested in the meeting that villages in the Ridge area should be re-developed and public utilities like “baraat ghar” and multi-purpose parks (where marriage functions could be held) should be built in adequate numbers in all the zones.

The Board also decided that the Authority would lay emphasis on housing for the economically weaker sections (EWS) and ensuring speedy development of basic amenities in a time-bound manner.

Under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission Scheme, 42,380 EWS houses have been planned so far. It is expected that about 8,690 EWS houses are likely to be taken up for construction by March 31 next year.

Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna also directed the Authority to take up building underground and multi-level parking and public conveniences in right earnest as part of DDA’s new initiative.

To meet the increasing demand for residential, industrial, commercial and institutional land, DDA has decided to undertake development works at Rohini, Dwarka, Narela, Jasola, Okhla and Mayur Vihar.
