And now, one-way for pedestrians

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: You have heard of one-way rule for vehicles. But have you ever heard of one-way rule for pedestrians?

The Bangalore City Traffic Police, in order to manage New Year eve’s revelling and the expected crowd in and around Mahatma Gandhi Road area, have imposed this restriction on Brigade Road from its junction on Mahatma Gandhi Road to its junction on Residency Road.

This is apart from banning the entry and parking of vehicles on this stretch of the road and other frequently haunted roads by revellers adjoining Mahatma Gandhi Road between 8 p.m. on December 31 and 1 a.m. on January 1.

Tough time

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic-Central) Ishwar Prasad said last year police had a tough time in controlling the crowd moving on both the directions on this stretch of Brigade Road. Movement of people had to be regulated as thousands tried to walk on all directions on this relatively narrow stretch on New Year eve. The situation also encouraged harassment of women by revellers, he said.

While people can move on Mahatma Gandhi Road from Cauvery Emporium towards Opera Junction on Brigade Road, they cannot walk back on the same road. If they want to enter Mahatma Gandhi Road from Residency Road, they will have to take Residency Cross Road (near Symphony Theatre Cross), said an official release.
