A bout of excitement

BERHAMPUR: First ‘All India Kalinga Cup’ boxing championship is being held at the Khallikote Autonomous College stadium of the city.

The three-day championship organised by the Ganjam District Amateur Boxing Association would continue till Sunday. The tournament was inaugurated by the by Arjun award winner senior boxer, S. Jayaram on Friday. For the first time a national level amateur boxing tournament is being organised in the State, said president of the GDABA Sarat Kumar Sahu. Around 150 men and women boxers from Army Sport Institute, Pune, Sikh Regiment Center, Ramgarh, Jharakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Sikkim, Chatisgarh, Assam, Punjab, Haryana and Orissa are participating in this championship, said Kaviraj Gouda, secretary of the GDABA. Twenty-three bouts of primary level of the competitions were held on the inaugural day. On Saturday 21 bouts of both men and women categories were played. The finals of all categories would be held on the concluding day. Three young international boxers of the country, S.Santosh Singh, Rakesh Karleskar and Parvinder Singh would be honoured during this championship for their contribution to Indian boxing.

These boxers are also participating, said B.B. Mohanty, coach of the junior national boxing team.
