NEW DELHI: A 40-member delegation of poets, singers, artists and peace activists from Pakistan will pay homage to actor, poet, political and street theatre activist Safdar Hashmi on his 19th death anniversary here on New Year’s Day. ProgrammeThe programme will also mark the beginning of the 20th year of the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust (SAHMAT). The proceedings will begin at 1 p.m. on January 1 with performances by musicians, theatre artistes, recitations by poets and modern dance. The theme of this year’s programme will be “the moment of the modern in the Indian cultural tradition”. PresentationsThere will be three presentations comprising photographs by Sunil Janah, paintings and woodcuts by Chittoprasad and paintings by M. F. Husain. While the presentation on Sunil Janah will be made by veteran photographer Ram Rahman, the presentations on Chittoprasad will be made by Sanjay Mullick and the one on Husain by K. Bikram Singh. Vidya Shah, who has composed a number of songs in a new cross-cultural idiom, will have a CD of these songs released during the memorial. Also, Sumangla Damodaran with Deepak Castelino will render some of the famous IPTA (Indian People’s Theatre Association) songs in different languages. Mr. Hashmi was fatally attacked on January 1, 1989, while performing in a street play nearly 20 km from Delhi.
