BJP’s conditions for ‘fresh admissions’

Special Correspondent

The party will go

by the opinion of

district units

SEDAM: The former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Saturday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would go by the opinion of the respective district units before admitting leaders from other political parties.

This would hold good for the former Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash and other leaders also, he said.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Yeddyurappa said that a decision in this regard was taken at an informal meeting with the Central leaders, who echoed the same view. When asked whether Mr. Prakash had evinced interest in joining the party, Mr. Yeddyurappa refused to give a direct answer.

He said that he and other leaders of the party were in touch with Mr. Prakash.

He also admitted that there was opposition to Mr. Prakash’s entry from the Bellary district unit of the party.

On the demand for the removal of Sadananda Gowda, from the post of the party’s State president, Mr. Yeddyurappa shot back saying that the news of such a demand was a creation of the media.

The leader who was said to have made such a statement himself had denied it, he said. He said under the leadership of Mr. Gowda, the party was vibrant and all morchas of the party had become active.

The party was ready to face the elections.

“I would like Mr. Gowda to continue not only for this term, but also for a second term in the interest of the party,” Mr. Yeddyurappa said.

To another question, he said that party tickets would be given based on the candidate’s popularity, performance and winning prospects.

The party would take the help of private consultants to conduct individual surveys in all constituencies, including those held by the BJP, to know the pulse of the people, he said.Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the party, which was hopeful of winning more than 150 seats, also knew its limitations and was in search of good candidates.

To another query from presspersons, Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the party had divided the State into six regions for the purpose of elections and added that each of these regions would be headed by a senior leader, who would head a team to chalk out strategies for the coming elections.
