Dhotis, saris ready for distribution

Staff Reporter

Meant for Pongal festival in Theni district

THENI: Distribution of free dhotis and saris to the poor for Pongal festival will begin in the district on January 1.

Elaborate arrangements had been made to distribute 3.68 lakh sets of saris and dhotis to all beneficiaries through fair price shops on or before January 10, said Collector Har Sahay Meena.

A total of 1,28,930 sets of saris and dhotis had been given to Uthamapalayam, 53,085 sets to Bodinayakkanur, 53,865 sets to Theni, 66,600 to Periakulam, and 66,500 to Andipatti taluks for distribution.

All the saris and dhotis had been despatched in advance to the respective taluks.

A special committee comprising village administrative officer, sub-registrar of cooperatives, rural welfare officer, panchayat president, ward member and representative of people had been constituted to monitor distribution.

The officials would issue clothes to beneficiaries on the basis of a list received from ration shops.

List of beneficiaries was displayed at all fair prices shops, village panchayat offices and office of the village administrative officers for public view. Massive publicity had been given at villages about procedures, place and time of distribution, he added.

To avoid rush, the VAOs were directed to distribute only 100 coupons to beneficiaries in the morning and 100 in the evening. This system would continue on all days till January 10, including Saturdays and Sundays.

Mr. Meena said that to begin with, the VAO concerned would affix a seal on the ration card of each beneficiary. Name of beneficiary, his address and ration card number would be filled in a coupon. Later, the VAO would sign the coupon and hand it over to the beneficiary, who, in turn, must hand it over to the distribution official and receive the sari or dhoti.

The Collector appealed to the people to know their fair price shop in advance and extend full cooperation with officials to avoid any delay in distribution.

The Government had allotted 1.64 crore sets of dhotis and polyester saris to distribute to the poor for the festival in the State.
