Awareness on consumer rights in rural areas stressed

‘Consumers in rural areas exploited by commercial establishments’

People asked to approach redressal forums


RASIPURAM: Collector G. Sundaramurthi called upon students, officials and members of volunteer organisations to raise the level of awareness about consumer rights among people in the rural areas.

Participating in the National Consumer Rights Day celebrations organised by the Tamil Nadu Consumer Vigilance Council in Muthayammal College of Arts and Science here recently, the Collector said that many people in the rural areas were not educated. As a result, consumers in the rural areas were being exploited by the commercial establishments easily, he pointed out.

Literacy rate

He pointed out that the literacy rate should be increased in order to spread consumer awareness. The district administration had taken up various steps to achieve 100 per cent literacy.

Tamil Nadu Khadi Village Industries Board Honorary secretary K. Lakshmikanthan Bharathi spoke on consumer rights and right to information act. He asked the people to approach the consumers disputes redressal forums to get their grievances redressed

Prizes distributed

The Collector also distributed prizes to the winners of various competitions organised as a part of the celebrations. P. Sathya and M. Sathishkumar of Muthayammal Polytechnic College secured the first and second places respectively in the essay writing competition.

P. Priyanka and K. Sathyadevkumar won the first and second places respectively in the elocution competition. Council chairman S. Selvam presided.

College Secretary K.P. Ramaswamy also spoke.
