Workers want cement prices controlled
Staff Reporter
MADURAI: The Madurai district unit of Tamil Maanila Kattida Thozhilalar Sangam has urged the State Government to control the prices of cement and other construction materials.
In a resolution passed at its recent meeting here, the association expressed concern over the increase in cost of building materials and wanted the Government to fix the price for cement.
It pointed out that the State Government had not earmarked sufficient funds for the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers’ Welfare Board and suggested that at least 5 per cent of the annual budget be allocated for social security schemes.
The meeting, presided over by R. Suresh Kumar, called for the issue of free house site pattas for construction workers and implementation of Tamil Nadu Manual Workers (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Work) Act, 1982 (Tamil Nadu Act 33 of 1982)
A crèche should be built in places where construction workers were more in number as this would result in the elimination of child labour among the community, the meeting said, according to a press release. The other demands included enhancement of pension for construction workers from Rs 400 to Rs 1000.
