State failed to provide relief to flood-hit people”

Special Correspondent

“CHENNAI: All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Saturday criticised the State Government for its “failure” to carry out flood relief works in rain-affected districts.

In a statement here, she said a good government was one which extended immediate relief to suffering people. But, the Government was frittering away its funds on schemes such as free colour television. The money could be utilised for providing relief to the affected people and repairing damaged roads and bridges.

Describing the scheme as a move to “deceive the people,” Ms. Jayalalithaa said though the Government had warned that those selling television sets distributed under the scheme would be booked under the Goondas Act, there were reports of their large-scale sale.

According to her it was a wasteful scheme where public money was being spent in an unproductive manner.
