Retail boom hits Madurai

Believe it or not, by 2008 India will be a tough competitor for China not only in population growth but also in retail industry revolution. Recently IMF Chief Economist Simon Johnson has remarked "For the first time, China and India are making the largest country-level contributions to world growth". The developing nation India, will definitely not remain a third-world country by 2008 is a firm say of this global economy predictor.

This current growth of the retail industry is a standing proof that puts on display the fact that with food, shelter & clothing the basic needs of human race doesn’t freeze.

Their choice and taste is not confined within their own tradition and social environment.

As more and more acquaintance with popular mass media and internet facilities is gained so their pace and way of life gets altered.

There by the psyche for consumerism is propagated via various ideological apparatuses. Yet fragmented culture & pluralistic societal setup till date are the hallmarks of India. It’s now high time to checkout what our hometown retailers have got to tell us about the New Year commercial commemoration.

Dazzling Depots

M.Prasanna, coordinator of Thangamayil Jewellery told that they hold dear for their traditional jewels. Offers are on during Pongal festival as the month ‘Thai’ is celebrated by farmers and ethnic people as the month of prosperity and progress.

He asserts that their customer base is spread all over southern Tamil Nadu.Furnishings

Mr.Surendran, Managing Director of Vinayaka and Suvashsika furniture happily entered into conversation where he vividly stated their categorized business strategy.

The Vinayaka furniture is an exclusive spot for Indian furniture which is particularly meant for small size house holders. Latest models of imported furniture brought in from China, Malaysia are available at Suvashsika and are purchased mostly by well-off sects. Among the lot the wooden sofa – ‘5 piece package’ is best selling and China wooden works with bed-package, hall furniture that is familiar for the last 6 months is bought for individual bungalows.

Hop & Shop

Home-appliance shops are the landing resorts for most of the temple-city’s sons. It is in this destination with unlimited items we are losing our souls. Mr.Kumaran of Viveks’ proudly upholds that retail culture of Maduraites is their creation. They are meeting out very good sales of Fridge, Washing Machine, Mixie, Grinder, Cell Phones during festive seasons. In his point of view, Madurai being a village based town with more government employees and a very less private working population opts for low budget and cost effective products.

With gold coin gift for every purchase greater than Rs.10000 and silver coin for every purchase above Rs.1000 and lot other manufacturers’ offers, Meenakshi Fan House has triggered its New Year sales. LCD, AC, digital camera, TV, Fridge are few of the supersonic moving artifacts in our house states Mr.Saravanan, Managing Director. “We attract both high-end consumers and general users.

Starting from emergency light till mixie, grinder, fan and cell phones all products reach out all sorts of consumers.

Although we have good number of customer round the year it is during festive seasons the hype is always high”.

Madurai, a non-metro town with mainstream of B-class citizens is now undergoing an exciting retail transformation. It seems that it is through the rapid retail revolution the digital era has strongly footed even into commoner’s lives.

Food-retailing sector was once the only space for unlimited opportunity but at present home furniture, household goods, durable goods and leisure and personal goods are invisibly turning into part and parcel of our lives.
