CHENNAI: Streetlights in the city will soon automatically switch on and off at set times. Mayor M. Subramanian inaugurated streetlights with timer switches at Kavignar Kannadasan Nagar here on Friday evening. A total of 1,986 switches used to operate streetlights in the city are expected to be replaced in the next four to five months with timer switches at the cost of Rs. 2.43 crore. As part of the first phase, 21 timers have been installed at the cost of Rs. 28.5 lakh. Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said the timers would promote energy efficiency and save between 5 and 10 per cent of the Rs. 18 crore the local body pays the Electricity Board annually for streetlights’ electricity consumption. One yearThe expenditure on the timer switches could possibly be recovered within one year, he said. It would also address the problem of power shortage. Mr. Subramanian said an additional 10,299 streetlights are being added and 28 high-mast lamps being installed at a cost close to Rs. 18 crore. Sixty solar lamps would be installed at Saidapet and tenders have been called for the project estimated to cost Rs. 22.8 lakh, he said.
