Charnock’s mausoleum restored

KOLKATA: Removing the cobwebs of time, the restored mausoleum of Job Charnock was on Saturday opened to the public, bringing back legends about the man arguably the founder of the metropolis who also paved the way for establishment of the British Raj.

Tucked in an obscure corner of the historic St John’s Church in the city’s B B D Bag area, the mausoleum has been a staple attraction of tourists, who have a trying time locating it among an overgrowth of trees and creepers.

As part of the restoration project, the brainchild of Kolkata Sherif Rathin Dutta and executed by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the freshly painted mausoleum now has new lanscaping and access gate, as also a fencing to prevent dropping of garbage. British Deputy High Commissioner Simon Wilson lauded those involved in the project. - PTI
