Form committees to monitor child rights violations: forum

Staff Reporter

DINDIGUL: Child labourers, school children and rescued child labourers appealed to the State Government to constitute district-level children committees to monitor child rights violations.

Children gram sabha and urban sabha in the line of panchayat gram sabhas should also be convened to enable those aged up to 18 years to air their grievances and table their demands and draw attention of the government on child issues.

A team of 52 children, including child labourers, made these appeals during an awareness campaign here on Friday. The children sabhas should be constituted at district, gram panchayat, town panchayat, municipality and corporation levels, they insisted.

Demand recognition

The children and NGOs also demanded recognition and guarantee of children’s right to participate in taking decisions relating to the life of children as ensured in the UN Convention on Rights of the Child, 1989.

In his special address during the campaign, Forum for Promotion of Children’s Participation, Founding Member, L. Antonysamy, said that the children did not have a proper forum to decide about their life and air their demands.

Strict action should be taken against those committing crimes against children. A child rights sensitisation programme could also organised among people. Family, academic institutions and the Government must ensure child participation, said Saravana Perumal, State joint secretary of the Forum.

State-level conference

Another child, Manzoor, said the 52-member team would take part in the State-level conference on child rights to be held in Chennai on December 29 and 30.
