Manipur bags another gold

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Manipur added one more gold medal to its kitty as it won the men’s foil team event on the third day of the 18th National senior fencing championship on Saturday.

It was once again a tussle for supremacy between Manipur and arch-rival Indian Army in the lone final of the day. And expectedly, it was a smooth ride for Manipur which won 15-7 to seal its fourth gold medal of the championship. In the semifinals, held earlier, Manipur had made short work of Punjab 15-12, while the Army side had brushed aside the challenge of Assam 15-10.

The day also witnessed a start being made to the individual events. And here again, the Manipuri supremacy was quite evident as S. Jayanta representing the champion State marched into the final of the men’s epee event. In the final to be held on Sunday, the final day, Jayanta will take on Harpreet Singh (Punjab).

The women’s sabre final, also to be held on the concluding day, will witness an all-Manipur final between N. Harina Devi and Th. Dina. The two progressing to the title round at the expense of Shivani Hans (Jammu & Kashmir) and Sandeep Kaur (Punjab) respectively.

The results: Men: Foil team event (final): Manipur bt Indian Army 15-7. Semifinals: Manipur bt Punjab 15-12; Indian Army bt Assam 15-10. Epee (semifinals): S. Jayanta (Man) bt Rohit (Kar) 15-14; Harpreet Singh (Pun) bt S. Suri (J&K) 15-11.

Women: Sabre (semifinals): N. Harina Devi (Man) bt Shivani Hans (J&K) 15-10; Th. Dina (Man) bt Sandeep Kaur (Pun) 15-6.
