Madurai: Tamilan Cricket Club, Karaikudi, and Olympus Cricket Club, Madurai, entered the semifinals of the sixth annual Sun Brothers Trophy State-level knock-out cricket tournament at Usilampatti on Saturday. The scores: Tamilan CC, Karaikudi, 146 in 24.1 overs (Siva 40) bt Majestic CC, Madurai, 104 in 21.5 overs; Urumu Dhanalakshmi College, Tiruchi 133 in 21.5 overs lost to Olympus CC, Madurai 134 for six in 24.3 overs (Murari 41). Maheswaran in leadP. Maheswaran of Sivakasi is in sole lead with 6.5 points at the end of the seventh round in the 11th State-level open chess tournament for the Pearl City Trophy at Tuticorin on Saturday. Three players — S. Venkatsundaram of Chennai, who beat top seed and International master R. Balasubramanian of ICF, Chennai, in the sixth round, former National deaf and dumb champion, M.K. Alaguraja of Madurai and Venprakash of Chennai — closely follow behind with 6 points each. Important results (seventh round): Dhanasekaran Suresh 5 lost to P. Maheswaran 6.5; P. Sports tournamentThe Kalasalingam University will organise three all-India prize money tournaments at the university campus, Krishnan Kovil, near Srivilliputhur from January 3 to 12. The first will be the Anandam Ammal Memorial Trophy inter-university (men) cricket tournament, which will be held from January 3 to 7. Fourteen universities, including Jamia Millia Islamia (New Delhi), Mysore University, Saurashtra University (Rajkot), KIIT University (Bhubaneswar), Kannada University (Hampi), Pondicherry, Annamalai, Madurai Kamaraj and host Kalasalingam are participating. The second will be the inter-school boys cricket tournament and the third will be inter-school girls volleyball tournament under flood lights. These tournaments will be held from January 8 to 12. In schools cricket, 32 schools and in volleyball 21 teams from all over India are participating.
