Assembly pays tributes to Benazir

Staff Reporter

The sittings were held for over 10 hours in three-day winter session

NEW DELHI: Delhi Assembly Speaker Chaudhary Prem Singh on Saturday said that though its winter session lasted just three days, the sittings were held for over 10 hours and the House utilised 43 per cent more time than prescribed and tried to make up for the short duration.

The House also set a new precedent while making obituary references for those not directly connected to it. It paid homage to former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto who was assassinated on Thursday and to former Delhi Deputy Mayor S. S. Bajwa and observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for them.

The Speaker said the session was very important because many vital issues were taken up for discussion.

Mr. Singh said according to the scheduled time only 30 issues could be taken up for discussion under special mention, while 40 issues were raised.

Moreover, three Bills, including an amendment to a Bill, were introduced and two passed.

During Question Hour on the three days, 14 starred questions were taken up and members raised 46 supplementary questions.

Discussions were also held on the issues of unauthorised colonies and power.

The Bills that were introduced during the session included the IIIT (Indian Institute of Information Technology) Delhi Bill, 2007, and the Prevention of Defacement of Property Bill, 2007.

The Bills introduced and passed during the session were the Bharat Ratna Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University Amendment Bill, 2007 and the National Law School, Delhi University Bill, 2007.
