MEERUT: The “Gur mandi” of western Uttar Pradesh, which provides jaggery worth Rs.2 crore daily, will remain closed indefinitely from January 1 in protest against the introduction of Value Added Tax in the State from that day. The Naveen Mandi Vyapar Mandal has decided to close the mandi indefinitely, said the vice-president of the Association, Shiva Kumar Kallu. “While in other states jaggery is exempted from VAT, it has been imposed in Uttar Pradesh. So in protest against this the ‘Gur mandi’ will remain closed indefinitely from January 1,” he added. - PTI
