No official word on postponement of polls

ISLAMABAD: There is no official word yet on postponement of the January 8 elections in Pakistan, and the government has said it will consult the Pakistan People’s Party and other political parties before deciding this. But informed sources say a decision has been taken “in principle” to put off the polls.
The PPP’s central executive committee is to meet in Larkhana in Sindh on Sunday to discuss the party’s participation in the elections, and also the issue of appointing a successor to Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated on Thursday.
Sunday will also see thousands of people converging on Naudero, Benazir’s ancestral home in Larkhana district, for the soyen, the third day mourning for Benazir.
