Train robbery victim’s body taken back home

Staff Reporter

Police track down his brother-in-law who was on the train

Railway Police start patrolling the section between City and Cantonment stations

The assailants spoke Assamese and stayed in Tubrahalli slum

BANGALORE: Embalmed and placed in a coffin, Akmal Hussain, the 50-year-old agricultural worker who was murdered by a three-member gang on Guwahati Express on Thursday night, was taken to his home town by the same train on Friday. Wife Amira Bibi and daughter Sareena Khatun, along with two other relatives, accompanied the body.

Hussain was stabbed to death when the gang attacked his family on the train, soon after it had left the City Railway Station.

They were on their way to their home town Malda in West Bengal. The three dacoits attacked the family and robbed them of about Rs. 50,000 in cash.

Meanwhile, the Railway police have been continuing the search for assailants involved in the attack. “They were all speaking Assamese,” an official investigating the case told The Hindu.

The police suspect involvement of people from Hussain’s home town, many of whom are staying in Tubrahalli slum near Varthur. Hussain had stayed in the slum with his family for a few days.

The Railway Police are closely studying the footage of the close-circuit television to find the assailants involved in the attack.

The post-mortem report has revealed that Hussain died of stab wounds near his heart.

The Railway Police have also tracked down Nooh Ali, Hussain’s brother-in-law who was travelling with them on the train when the attack happened. Mr. Ali had been missing since Friday morning and was found in Tubrahalli slum.

Vigilance increased

Meanwhile, the Railway Protection Force has increased its security for the Guwahati Express, on which the tragic incident occurred. The Railway Police have also started patrolling along the section between City Railway Station and Cantonment station.

Compensation

Chief Security Commissioner of South Western Railway C. Damodaran told The Hindu that the family was eligible for compensation and interim relief only if it applied for it.

The family members were not eligible for ex-gratia which was only given to those killed in rail-related accidents.

The Railway Act provided for paying compensation for loss of life and injuries resulting from an accident. Compensation, on the other hand, was given to victims of terrorist attack, robbery, dacoity, rioting and arson.
