“Dalit man’s killers threatening family”

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: More than three months after the murder of a Dalit man at Ravidaspura village in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan after he challenged the encroachers on his land, the alleged killers are roaming freely and threatening the family of the deceased. None of the murderers has been arrested and no mandatory financial assistance has been paid to the bereaved family.

A fact-finding team of the Centre for Dalit Rights (CDR) which visited Ravidaspura in Nagar tehsil over the weekend found an atmosphere of terror prevailing in the village, with the dominant Gujjars still intimidating the Dalits.

Eight Gujjars had allegedly encroached upon Ramkhiladi Jatav’s agricultural land in the nearby Puchhri village and filed a suit in the Nagar revenue court in 2000 challenging his “khatedari” rights. The courts of Assistant Collector and Sub-Divisional Officer rejected the case thrice under the Tenancy Act.

Having failed to legitimise their encroachment through the legal process, the Gujjars’ group allegedly attacked Ramkhiladi and his family.
