FINE SHOW: Japan’s Tomohiko Nishiwaki, astride Pralay, came up with an impeccable performance to win the individual championship on Saturday.

CHENNAI: Seventeen-year-old Tomohiko Nishiwaki of Japan nudged out two Indian riders to claim the individual gold in the CSI ‘Y’ International equestrian championship at the Mohite Stadium, Officers Training Academy, St. Thomas Mount, here on Saturday.

Nishiwaki, a native of Nara, a small city in Japan, committed a minimum of four penalty points in rounds I and II, and was tied with India’s Sudhir Singh and Udai Singh.

In the jump-off that ensued, Nishiwaki, astride Pralay, coming in first, produced a clean round in a time of 32.68 seconds.

Sudhir second

The subsequent rider, Delhi’s Sudhir (astride Guddu), provided a lot of anxious moments, but did a splendid job in clearing all the fences.

The 20-year-old, aspiring to get into the Indian Military Academy (Dehradun), completed the course in a time of 35.02s to emerge second.

Udai (on Arjuna), the third rider, faulted on the fourth fence in the jump-off and had to settle for the bronze.

The gruelling junior National championship one-day event, the final competition of the 20-day extravaganza, will be held on Sunday.

The one-day event, apart from dressage that was completed on Saturday, will have cross-country and show jumping.

The cross-country involves the horse and the rider to do a 2.3km ride through 16 natural obstacles at the New Training Area, Officers Training Academy.

The winner will be adjudged on the points accumulated in these three events.

The results:

CSI ‘Y’ international individual championship: 1. Tomohiko Nishiwaki on Pralay, 32.68s; 2. Sudhir Singh on Guddu 35.02; 3. Udai Singh on Arjuna 37.66.
